Consider the intersection of food and social connectedness. Preparing food together is a social activity. Gathering for meals is a social activity. Sowing seeds is social activity. Harvesting produce is a social activity. Raising livestock is a social activity. Sharing traditional recipes solidifies our cultural links across generations.
But, we need to know about food safety to ensure we do not acquire foodborne illnesses; we do not create an environment that fosters the growth of microbes in food; and we do not want to overlook potential contamination or danger in the food products we select for consumption.
We need to know that potatoes exposed to light develop a green colour. That green colouration means the potatoes contains chlorophyll which gives the greenish colour and denotes the production of a toxic chemical called solanine.
We need to know about safe canning techniques.

We need to know about contaminated food products in our grocery stores. There are many federal agencies responsible for food safety in the USA. Their responsibilities include inspecting foods; setting standards for safety and measures which can be evaluated; holding food producers accountable for infractions; providing information to consumers and to producers; and engaging in research on food and nutrition.
Call your elected officials and tell them how important it is for all residents in the USA to have access to information and access to safe food. Tell them that we need to expand not contract the agencies responsible for food safety in the USA.
