Connectedness to the Earth

Lest you had not noticed, we are living on planet earth. Earth is home to me. I love my home.

Earth is a constant companion to all of us. I have obligations to my companion.

Earth deserves to be respected. Earth deserves my gratitude. Earth deserves my charity. Earth needs nurturing. Earth requires my attention to her health, safety, and beauty.

Earth gives me everything I need to live. Earth exposes the evolving sky to enlighten my day and shade my night. Earth affords me the opportunity for unbelievable relationships with people who inspire me and enrich my life. Earth shares her beautiful plants and animals with me.

Maybe I don’t deserve this sacrifice, especially if I do not give back to Earth.

Promote Mental Wellbeing via Earth’s Gifts

Earth Day and mental wellbeing go hand in hand.

The earth offers nature to improve mental wellbeing. Recall my post about poetry and mental wellbeing, in which I referenced the contribution of visiting greenspaces to mental wellbeing.

The earth lets me connect with people, engage in social connection, which benefits mental wellbeing. See my post about social connection and mental wellbeing.

Exploring earth’s spaces and beauty, I disconnect from technology which often kidnaps me, hijacking my ability to pay attention in the moment and just be present in the here and now. Read my post about technology and mental wellbeing.

On planet earth, symphonies of birds and sheep and bees and squirrels and cats and barking foxes and cicadas and all of earth’s wonders embrace me and lull me to sleep or invite me to learn about them. Consult my post on music and mental wellbeing.

As I wander around this home I call earth, I can exercise, in many different ways. Walking, running, skipping, skating, swimming, cycling, hiking, rolling, cartwheeling. Exercise contributes to mental wellbeing, as discussed in a prior post.

National Parks, Earth Day, and Mental Wellbeing

You may think I have gone too far.

Take a peek at the website for the National Park Service. If you ask me, they are right on target. They even identify two benefits of engaging in nature while visiting a National Park which I failed to mention. Visit a National Park to foster the development of empathy and promote learning thereby cultivating mental wellbeing.

See for yourself.

Above all, be mindful, every day, every moment, about what you take from Mother Earth and how you can give back to Mother Earth. We owe her our lives.

Our mental wellbeing depends on a healthy Earth.

Be happy. Be safe. Be mindful of each other. Be kind to Mother Earth.
